A Bad Smell That Won’t Go Away
If your home has developed an unpleasant smell, your first thought might be the kitchen bin, the fridge, or something that’s been left in a cupboard. However, if you’ve checked everything and the smell still persists, your drains could be the culprit.
Wastewater pipes can develop a build-up of food, grease, hair, soap residue, or other debris. This can create unpleasant odours, particularly if water isn’t flowing through the pipe properly.
A persistent smell coming from a sink, shower or bathroom can also indicate an issue with the trap, pipework or drainage system.
If the smell keeps returning despite cleaning, it might be time to have your drainage system checked by a professional.
A Slow-Draining Sink
A sink that takes longer to empty than usual is easy to ignore, as often it’s something that gets progressively worse without being noticed.
The problem is that slow drainage is often one of the earliest signs of a developing blockage. Grease, food particles and other debris can gradually restrict the flow through the pipe.

If you hear bubbling, gurgling, or unusual sounds when your toilet flushes, your washing machine drains, or water runs from a sink, it could indicate a restriction somewhere in the drainage system.
As water struggles to pass through a partially blocked pipe air can become trapped and displaced, creating those familiar gurgling noises.
One strange noise doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a major problem, but if gurgling is becoming a regular occurrence (especially alongside slow drainage or unpleasant smells), it’s worth taking notice.
Your Toilet is Flushing Differently
If the flush on your toilet has become weaker, the water level is inconsistent, or the toilet is draining unusually slowly, there could be more to it than an isolated plumbing problem.

If there’s a particular patch of grass in your garden that’s noticeable greener or damper that the surrounding area, it could simply be a difference in soil type or how the garden is watered. A damaged or leaking pipe can allow water into the surrounding soil, sometimes creating a visible difference in the soil or grass. Other signs such as persistent wet ground, sinking areas or unpleasant smells can make a drainage issue more likely.

The biggest warning sign with drainage is often repetition. A sink that keeps blocking after repeated cleaning, returning unpleasant smells, having a blockage cleared only for another to appear somewhere else.
