First Signs of Trouble
Reports came to us from a plumber working on behalf of one of our regular commercial clients that waste and water at a few residential properties was not draining as it should. On arrival, our engineer immediately began inspecting all manholes around the property. One chamber, left open by the plumber, provided the first major clue.
A Serious Obstruction
The manhole was in a critical state. It was heavily packed with wipes, waste and debris. The build-up was so severe that the base of the chamber was completely filled. All lateral connections were covered, and the full diameter of the pipe was obstructed. In short, nothing was moving.
A Hands-On Solution
This wasn’t a blockage that could be cleared with jetting alone. Proving we’re not afraid of facing a challenge, our engineer had to break down the mass by hand to reveal any flow paths. Only once this work was done could the jetting begin. It was slow, tough work, but persistence is what we’re known for!
After making progress, we jetted 50 metres downstream. That’s when the second problem appeared. Another major blockage was identified further along the line. This was forcing waste to backfill into the manhole, worsening the situation.
Why Wipes Cause Problems
One of the biggest cause of blockages like this is wipes. Even products labelled as “flushable” don’t break down in the same way as toilet paper. Instead, they gather in pipework, trapping other debris and creating stubborn obstructions. That’s why we always recommend keeping wipes, sanitary products and similar items out of the toilet. Bin it-don’t flush it.
