Think Before You Flush: DALROD Oxford Clears Blockage Caused by a Common Culprit.

Recently, our Oxford team were called to a property after the tenant reported unusual drainage issues. When the bath was emptied, water was gurgling in the wash basin and bubbles were appearing in the toilet. These are classic signs of a potential blockage.

Initial Investigation

On arrival, the engineer investigated the internal drainage system. The manhole on the property’s driveway contained stones which were promptly cleared. Further inspection of two additional manholes revealed they were completely full of wastewater. The main culprit was then discovered: a build-up of sanitary items and wipes which was causing a significant blockage.

Restoring Flow

Using High Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ), the manholes were cleared and the flow fully restored. Toilets were flushed and the taps were run to ensure the system was free flowing, before leaving the property clean and tidy.

An Important Drainage Reminder

This case is a timely reminder of the importance of only flushing the 3 P’s… Pee, poo and toilet paper.

  • Sanitary items and tampons should always be placed in the bin, never down the toilet.
  • Wipes (even those marketed as “flushable”) don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause costly blockages.
Keeping Drains Flowing

By disposing of items correctly, households can avoid drainage issues, reduce the risk of flooding, and help keep the wider sewer network running smoothly.

Here are a few more signs that your property’s drainage needs immediate attention:

  • Unpleasant Odours: If you notice foul smells coming from your drains, it could indicate a blockage or a problem within the pipework. DALROD help can identify and resolve the source of the odours by carrying out a CCTV survey.
  • Slow Draining: When sinks, baths, or showers drain slowly it’s often a sign of a partial blockage. Left untreated, these can develop into more severe issues.
  • Gurgling Sounds: Unusual gurgling noises emanating from your drains might suggest trapped air in the system, a sign of a developing blockage.
